PlayStation 3 Super Slim Refurbishment & Fan Repair

I got given a PS3 console which was an ex smokers machine (so naturally caked in crap!) and also the fan was extremely noisey it made a clicking sound when it was on which was very loud.

My plan was to try and a fix the fan as i didn't want to buy a replacement (not a huge ps3 fan so didn't want to invest much) and also apply some fresh thermal paste.

Below, you can begin to see all the nasty smokers dust... yuk!

With it fully disassembled I could take a look at everything. The fan felt firm with very little play so my original thoughts about it being the bearings were incorrect.

Original thermal paste was removed and replaced.

I also decided to remove the old coin cell battery. I'm sure the original works but i had lots of new spares so why not.

As for the fan, I soaked it in isopropanol alcohol in the hope it just needs a good clean out.

All reassembled and testing began on the TV.

Happy to report the fan is now nice and quiet! Still unsure what the actual issue was but it is fixed now. I assume it either needed lubricating or cleaning from the dirty cigarette smoke.

Good times!
