ATX Motherboard Capacitor Change

I've inherited a cheap Biostar branded ATX motherboard.

This board had issues with turning off randomly and i was asked to look into why from a client. Instantly i noticed a number of capacitors had failed. They told me they needed it up and running again asap so I got them a nice eco friendly quad Pentium machine in the interest of time.

This left this old pc to rot, but this machine has proved to be a work horse after being on almost 24/7 since around 2006 or so (2016 now at time of writing) so instead of scrapping it, i pulled a few parts from the machine with permission from the client and I intend to breath some life back into this machine and use it as my workshop PC and folding@home box.

Here is the board:

Here are the caps which have failed

You can clearly see bulging capacitors and leaking electrolyte. Not good!

I cleaned the board up as it was used in a motorcycle shop so there is lots of exhaust smoke over all the components.

Removed the AM2 bracket to give it a good clean up the eagle eyed of you will notice the clip for the heatsink is damaged. The CPU was just hanging on this pc for god knows how long! this will be getting replaced.

Reassembling...

New Samsung DDR 2 RAM installed

The CPU bracket isn't going back on as the plastic was damaged where the heatsink clips on, god knows how this machine kept going with the heatsink hanging on with 1 clip. I've ordered another one to replace it though so just waiting on that.

For now, i will sit the heatsink on it with new thermal paste

Afew essentials, wifi, keyboard dongle and a USB stick with Hirens Boot CD on

It lives!!

I gave it a good run through memtest86+, stayed on for 2 hours no issues what so ever. This machine used to switch off after less than a minute so I'd call this one a winner!
