A friend has given me an Atari 2600 woody model to look at. The machine doesn’t power on. It has also had some work done on it previously where a previous owner has hard wired a power supply to the board directly.
Began with the initial strip down
Here is the handy work of a previous owner, the Atari uses a headphone type connection for power and these are pretty hard to find now so i guess this was their solution to not being able to find a replacement.
Checked the voltages to see if the power supply was actually working and…
19 volts! not good! Supposed to be 9V! Swiftly removed this and my friend says he might have a spare replacement so i will get that and also change the voltage regulator which is putting out nothing right now so i will assume it has failed.
New voltage regulators arrived, time to fit!
Old regulator ready to be removed
Removed! quick clean up of the solder pad area and now time to fit the nice new 7805 regulator with new heat sink compound
Clean up the legs from the new regulator, reassemble, good clean!
Replacement power supply arrived, anddddd….
It lives again!!!
