I recently got hold of a Game Boy Color.
It’s in need of some TLC as the battery panel is missing. screen is scratched and the sound is a little low. I plan to restore it to it’s former glory and also modify it so it can be played in the dark.
Here is the unit
and as you can see here… the screen is rather scratched…
I plan to recap the console, replace the screen cover, add a front light to the screen and also give it a new battery cover.
More updates very soon…
So here we go! Most of the parts have arrived so let’s restore and mod this little beast!
tri wing screw driver, Loca glue, LED front light and the soon to be, awesome GBC.
Cleaning the residue off from the old screen cover with rubbing alcohol.
Some prehistoric wotsits inside the case… lovely!
Time for an anti bacterial bath.
New screen cover fitted.
Time to work on the hardware… bye bye old dried up capacitors.
Time to fit the LED panel to the LCD screen.
To dry the glue, you need UV light with Loca glue. Luckily the sun was sort of out today.
While i was waiting for the glue to dry i decided to change out the power LED for a blue one because.. well, why not.
Glue dried so now time to remove the sponge backing to the LCD so that the new panel will fit in the case.
Also cleaned out the control rubbers.
With the backing removed.. time to fit.
Soldered the + and – to a 5v source and ground.
Back together! ready for testing.
Removing the protective film for the new screen cover.
Now that, looks good!!! No more scratches.
Power on… and…….
Looking great! and with nice loud sound now too thanks to the caps.
